The history of Oakover Nurseries

The original Oakover Nursery was a small forest tree production unit started in 1961 to service a forestry contracting company. From the mid-sixties an increasing volume of general nursery stock was introduced and additional light land, derived from the lower greensands was purchased to accommodate a widening range of quality trees, shrubs and hedging.

Oakover Nurseries Ltd was formed in 1976 with 50 acres which soon increased to 80 acres with the development of seedling production of native plants for landscaping motorways, industrial structure planting and the local authority market, while continuing to serve landowners, estates and farmers with forest trees.

Specialisation in the growing of understocks and a wide range of lining out stock has been developed from this base and we continue to improve these techniques with increasing mechanisation and handling facilities. Additional production land was purchased during the 1980s bringing the total to about 300 acres. In 1997 we built a large pack house and cold store on our Kemplands site and the office was relocated to this site in 1999. During the last two years we purchased another 300 acres of land to offset our considerable losses to the channel tunnel rail link.

Production is carried out by a dedicated, hardworking, loyal and skilled team and we produce from eight to ten million one and two year seedlings. Much of the seed is collected locally by our own staff. We transplant approximately two million seedlings annually to grow on as stocks, hedging plants and feathered trees.

Our container site produces one million liners and grafting stocks together with herbaceous perennials in 9cm pots together with larger trees and shrubs in 3L and 5L pots. We are carrying out more and more contract growing of container grown stock and look forward to being of assistance in this area.

Despatch is undertaken on our own road transport and by our own drivers all over the UK and into Europe.
